Neuromorphic computing in the UK

Brain-inspired computing for energy-efficient AI — a coordinated national community of research, networking, and commercialisation.

Three overlapping circles for NeuroSYNC, NeuMat and NeuroWare, meeting over an outline of the United Kingdom

The energy demands of AI are growing faster than conventional computing can sustainably support. Neuromorphic computing — hardware and algorithms modelled on the efficiency of the brain — offers a path to systems that are orders of magnitude more energy-efficient, enabling intelligent processing at the edge, in orbit, and at scale. The UK holds world-leading strengths across neuromorphic materials, devices, photonics, algorithms and systems. Three national initiatives now work together to turn that strength into a coherent ecosystem.

Three initiatives, one national effort

Research

NeuroSYNC

UK Multidisciplinary Centre for Neuromorphic Systems and Computing. A research-focused centre furthering the field and acting as the shop window for UK neuromorphic computing research. Leads the UK Neuromorphic Computing Roadmap — a near-term, living document setting out the core research and industrial foundations for the next ten years.

Networking & community

NeuMat

Neuromorphic Materials and Devices for Future AI Hardware. The UK's networking and community hub — running Network Meetings, Winter Schools and Summer Studentships, supporting early-career researchers, and acting as the sector's notice board to cross-link academia and industry.

Commercialisation

NeuroWare IKC

Innovation and Knowledge Centre for Neuromorphic Computing. University-based, pushing existing and novel research towards commercialisation: developing IP and supporting spin-outs, licensing and scale-up. Leads Neuromorphic Technologies: A Roadmap to 2050 — the UK's 25-year, policy-facing vision for global leadership in brain-inspired computing.

The three initiatives are complementary by design, not coincidence: each owns a distinct stage of the pipeline — research, networking, and commercialisation — with closely aligned roadmaps and one voice for the UK sector.

All three initiatives are funded through UKRI EPSRC.
